Josef Mengele, the angel of the death, the Nazi doctor who made experiments with binoculars in the concentration camp of Auschwitz during World War II, whose mission was to create a race dominant apt for the Third Reich, arrived in 1963 at Cândido Godói (Brazil), a small small village of Rio Grande do border Sul with Argentina. Since then, the rate of birth of binoculars of that town quadruplicates the world-wide average.

The disquieting hypothesis that Mengele has continued with its “work” until good entered the years 60 a village of emigrants Germans of the south of Brazil, is raised in the book of recent appearance, Mengele. The phenomenon has been studied by Brazilian, European and American geneticists, that have surrendered before the impossibility to explain it scientifically: in Cândido Godói the proportion of births of binoculars is of one each five childbirths, and in the rest of the world he is of one each twenty. Their inhabitants, descendants of German of the region of Hunsrüick, conserve the language and the customs transmitted by the pioneers at the beginning of century XX, and the town is a model of social order, without favelas, violence nor leisure.

Which is the scientific explanation for the phenomenon of the concentration of double births in the town? In spite of the attempts that became, still nobody has known to say it with certainty.

The bióloga Ursula Matte, of the Hospital of Clinics of Porto Alegre and of the University of Rio Grande do Sul, made a genealogical and genetic study of all the pairs of binoculars, and stated that 67% of them were dicigótico, that is to say heterogenous, produced by two embryos, and remaining 33% were homocigótico, that is to say equal, of the same sex and fruit of a same embryo.

The first conclusion that was come off its study, realised in years 90, was that it did not seem a case of genetic inheritance, since it is associate habitually to homocigóticos binoculars. Also it discarded the accidental factor, rejecting that could be a natural coincidence the one that had grouped in the region of Cândido Godói so many families with genetic predisposition to have binoculars. In addition, although it could think about a group of people with those characteristics, living in a same place and marrying it enters neighboring, almost without exodus and without inclusion of new inhabitants, living during many years in the same place and procreating many children, a data was from most peculiar: as of years 80, the number of births of twin tended to decrease, instead of to increase or to remain as it happened 20 years before.

The first testimonies on the presence of Josef Mengele in the zone of Cândido Godói send to 1963. The area in which it moved included the towns of Santo Christ, Long Hill, Linha San Antonio, San Pedro de Butiá and Cândido Godói, plus the small small villages and agricultural establishments to the side of the ways that it crossed.

It did not remain long time in any side, did not have a fixed address, it went and it came all along, and all it makes think that, at least at the outset, it continued living in Paraguay, house of the Krug family, and who it returned there after his excursions by Rio Grande.

They are vague and diffuse the things that did: ambulatory treatments like dentist or rural doctor, meetings with villagers to whom one appeared like veterinarian to speak to them of artificial insemination, nocturnal visits to the house of a woman.

But the numbers are concrete: the highest indices of births of binoculars in the zone of Cândido Godói are registered as of 1963, that is when a true big wave arrives from double childbirths.

Today, the ghost if Josef Mengele it were behind this unusual case continues being latent in the zone.
