They discover an hidden message in the clock of Abraham Lincoln

History, that had circulated during 150 years on an hidden message that a watchmaker recorded inside the clock of president Abraham Lincoln, was checked Tuesday by civil servants of the National Museum of History of the United States.

A watchmaker used tiny tools carefully abrir the old clock in the premises of the museum and a descendant of the watchmaker of that one time aloud read the message that existed in a metal lamina recorded underneath the title page of the clock.

Forward edge says: “13 of April - 1861. Fort Sumpter was attacked by the rebels in this date. J. Dillon”. The second part, repeats the same date, says that the place is Washington and adds, “Thanks to God that we have a government”.

The inscription was made in a tiny cursive and full letter the space between very small screws and nuts that cover the metallic plate. It was needed a magnifying glass to read it.

Jonathan Dillon was a watchmaker in the Pensilvania Avenue and had the clock in the hands when it found out that the first firings of the Civil War were done in Carolina of the South. The Irish immigrant later related that she was the unique supporter of the Union that worked in the establishment at that time at which Washington was divided.

The story of Dillon passed of generation in generation between its family and friendly, until in 1906 it arrived at ears of a journalist of New York Times. This entrevistó to Dillon, that already was 84 years old, and said to him that nobody had seen that inscription.

Doug Stiles, a tataranieto of the watchmaker, listened to the story of its uncle grandfathers some decades ago. A few months ago it found the information of the newspaper and a month ago it was put in contact with the civil servants of the Smithsoniano who did not know on the inscription.

A voluntary watchmaker of the museum, George Thomas, carefully abrió to the clock before a hearing of journalists and personnel of the museum that watched a television, by closed circuit.

When they found the inscription, there was a sigh of general lightening.
