They discover a small asteroid that could hit the Earth

The 31 of January of 2009, Robert Holmes, an astronomer of Astronomical Research Institute (EE.UU.), observed a well-known asteroid when it found another object at a high speed moving by the field of vision. It has already been confirmed that the object is a new Potentially Dangerous Asteroid (PHA, by the abbreviations in English of Potentially Hazardous Asteroid), with 10 possible risks of impact against the Earth in next the 100 years, being first in 2042.

Designated like 2009 BD81, this relatively small asteroid it will arrive at his point from maximum approach to the Earth next the 27 from February, when it happens to reassuring 7 million kilometers of distance (click in the image to extend it). Nevertheless, the present predictions affirm that in 2042 the asteroid will happen within the 5.5 terrestrial radios (about 31.800 km), that is to say, more underneath the orbit followed by the geostationary satellites, and two years it will do later it still more close.

The page of the NASA that monitors these objects established that 2009 BD81 are quite small, with a diameter of 314 M.s Holmes, one of the more prolific asteroid observers of the world, said that at the moment the probability that this asteroid hits against the Earth within 33 years is very low: 1 in 2.439.000. However, more observations are needed more accurately to calculate the future trajectory of the orbit of the asteroid.
