The celebration of Halloween, history, origins and meaning

The night of the 31 of October, the night of Halloween, is for many one full magical night of superstitions and myths. For others, it is not more than an excuse to leave disguised celebration to amuse itself, but we know that it really means Halloween, its origins, its traditions, its history, I hope that from now on all you prune to know well that it means the celebration of Halloween.

The elements most characteristic of Halloween or Night of Sorceresses are to even see disguises and decorations of black color and orange, as well as disguised people of sorceresses and ghosts or terroríficos suits. The children go of house in house asking caramels and we adorned everything with illuminated pumpkins. But, one really knows true history Halloween and the legend accompanies that it?

THE LEGEND OF THE PUMPKINS, JACK THE ONE OF THE LANTERN

The pumpkins are one of the elements characteristic at night of Halloween, but people really do not know from where this tradition comes.

History goes back back to times in which the farmer well-known O'Lantern Jack “the Tacaño” (Stingy Jack), an Irish man of bad reputation by its bad arts to deceive and to lie to which it knew. Jack was fan to the drink and at night of the Sorceresses it went to the bar where it ran into with very same Satan, that went there because the rumor of the so black soul of the farmer had arrived him.

That night, Jack drank next to the Devil that had taken human form and drank so much that did not have intention to stop doing it when the Devil really said to him that was and that came to take it by the sins that had committed.

Then, Jack said to him to the Devil that like last will, wanted to take another drink with him and then it would give his soul to him. Then, when they went to pay, neither it had money reason why the Devil transformed itself into the currency with which Jack would pay the glass but it took this one it kept and it in his portfolio in which crucifijo kept one from silver reason why the Devil could not return to its original form. Jack said to him to the Devil that would not let to him go but it promised to him that until within a year it would not return to him to request his soul and thus it was.

A year later, Jack and the Devil met in the field. The Devil already was preparation to take its soul but Jack requested the last desire to him: “I will go, but before doing it, you would please pass the apple to me that is in that tree,”. The devil did not guess the plans of the Irish and from a jump it arrived at the glass of the tree and, before occurring account, Jack it had carved a cross in the trunk of that tree with a knife reason why the devil could not lower and therefore, I cannot obtain its soul. Then Jack made promise to the devil that would not request its soul to him in ten years and the Devil accepted since it nothing else did not have left to do.

Years later, Jack died but they did not let to him enter the Sky since while still alive he had been a drunkard and a swindler. When one did not go either to Hell they let it enter because the Devil was in favor angry of the treatment that it had given him. Then, Jack I ask myself “Where I will go now” and the Devil answered to him “Returns by where you came”.

The return way was dark and by far wind, reason why the devil sent to Jack a coal to him ignited directly of hell so that it could be guided by the dark it put and it in a turnip that was eating so that it did not go out with the wind. Thus, Jack was condemned to eternally walk by the dark between the good and the evil. Over the years the Irish farmer was met like “Jack of the Lantern” (” Jack the one of the Lantern “).

The fact of the turnip is because the Irish are descending of celtas and by according to the tradition, they hollowed turnips and they put in them coal that they illuminated at the time of giving the welcome to his dear beings and simultaneously they were protected of the bad spirits. When the Irish arrived at America, the pumpkins knew and they realized that was greater and easier to hollow reason why they began to use them. Another one of the reasons by that they decorate the houses of pumpkins during this year is for avoiding that Jack calls to the houses asking “Trick or Treatment”.

TRICK OR TREATMENT AND ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN

At night traditional American of Halloween, the children disguise themselves of pumpkins, ghosts, sorceresses, vampires, momias or monsters and go out with the aim of going to the houses and to request sweet and surprises to them and if they do not occur it, they do some joke or prank to him.

The typical phrase that the children pronounce when they abren the door to him is “Trick or treatment”. If they choose “treatment” will give treats them but the children choose “trick” crack a joke to them like for example, to throw eggs or foams to shave against the door.

An origin tradition celta

This celebration more or less began towards year 400 a.C in a well-known tribe like celtas, that lived in Central Europe and the British islands, and had a secret society of druidas. Celtas celebrated the New Year the 1 of November and began this celebration the night of the 31 of October, night in which the priests (druidas) ignited great bonfires and realise acts of witchcrafts in honor to the horseman of the death, Samhain.

In this ceremony horses and some times sacrificed themselves human beings because they thought that thus they drove away to the sorceresses and the bad spirits since they thought that during tonight the spirits they could leave the cemeteries and seize of the bodies to revive and to request foods to those of the locality. Nevertheless, those that requested foods in fact were druidas, that took advantage of the fear that originated they threatened and them curses. In order to request food, druidas or Treat repeated “Trick”, that is to say “a pact or a trick” that at the moment is translated as “it give something me or I do a joke to you”. The inhabitants celtas, by fear to the supposed spirits, soiled their houses they filled and them of disagreeable bones, skulls and things so that the scared deads happened of length.

The Romans and “the Celebrations of Pomona”

Years later, when the Romans expanded their empire and they seized of the dominions celtas, added to his celebrations this new element that lasted several days between October and November, celebration that called “Celebrations of Pomona” that dedicated to the goddess of the fruit trees (as a grape harvest or celebration of the harvest) reason why incorporated to the celebration the fruits, like the apple.

“All Hallow's Even”, or the Day eve of All the Saints

When the Christianity propagated, to the catholic priests they did not like the adoration to this goddess to consider it a idolatry reason why they looked for a form to turn this celebration into a Christian festival. In this way, in year 837 d.C invented a day spent to the saints who did not have a special day during the year, the smaller saints, and since then the 1 of November is known like Day of All the Saints, who in England denominated “All Hallow's Day” and therefore, the previous night called “All Hallow's Even”, the “Day eve of All the Saints”. Over the years those words were united with the well-known contradictions of the language and the word happened to be Halloween.

A tradition that took the Irish to the USA

During the Average Age, some brigands took advantage these beliefs to commit disguised misdeeds of devils and other malignant beings to be able to throw to the fault to the spirits and since then began the custom to use disguises. Later, this festival arrived at the United States that was accepted as tradition by the small groups of faithfuls and became popular still more when in 1840 the Irish arrived at States United where the pumpkin with the candle ignited on the inside of Jack began to be used.

Finally, from 1921 the celebration of Halloween appears in the calendars and is celebrated massively, being celebrated parades like first in Minnesota. At the moment, and from years 70, this tradition extended mainly thanks to the terror cinema and it is celebrated in many places of the world, mainly in the Anglo-Saxon countries like Canada, the United States, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

In the cinema there are films like “the Night of Halloween” of John Carpenter where all a family is assassinated during that night by a killer psychopath or series that annually dedicate a chapter to him now like the Simpson.

The night which the deads enter the world of the alive ones

In its terrorífico side, one says that at night of Halloween, the door that will be the world of the alive ones of Further on it abre and the spirits enter our world where they make a procession in the towns in which they lived to visit the houses of its relatives in the best one of the cases, and for this reason, so that they did not disturb the other villagers, they had to put a candle in the window by each deceased who was in the family. Yes they put that candle, the spirits would not bother them, but it was not thus, would disturb them to the spirits during all night.

Also one says that one of those spirits went of house in house asking “trick or treatment”. If you did not make treatment, the spirit would be in charge to curse the family for example making it become ill, killing to the cattle with plagues or even burning the familiar house. Like solution, they placed the pumpkins with forms horrendas, for would not find with the phantoms.
