The plans of the great particle accelerator LHC have been totally truncated, at least at the moment. Failure serious registered in magnets that forms the ring of 27 kilometers of the accelerator, accompanied by loss considerable of helium liquid (the necessary coolant so that it works), will demand at least two months of work to make the repairs, to return to cool the affected sector and to resume the operations. The LHC is the greater scientific machine never constructed and the cost of the project ascends to 6,000 million Euros.

The incident took place Friday at noon and it was detected in center of control, but due to the helium spill - that limits breathable oxygen the technicians and engineers could not enter the tunnel where it is the LHC to later assess the damage until several hours. The access to the tunnel is prohibited when the accelerator works. The failure of Friday did not suppose risk some for the personnel of the European Laboratory of Physics of Partículas (CERN), according to informed this institution.

The failure supposes the type of mishap more feared for the engineers and people in charge of the CERN in the last months: any failure that forces to warm up and to return to cool a part of the LHC brings about a delay of several weeks.

The new calendar, not yet made public, supposes that the operation of the LHC will not be started again until November like soon. Since the plan were to stop it in December (as always in the accelerating of the CERN to make the annual revision of the machines during the winter), it will be little east margin year to put the machine in routine operation.
